PLAN YOUR WINDOW DISPLAY
Before you go ahead and create your window display have a think about a few things first:
1. Decide what you want to say
Have you got a story tell? This should revolve around the type of customers you want to bring in; you want to attract the right personas – think age, trends, cultures.
2. Sketch it out
You only have a few seconds for your audience to get your message and get what you’re selling. The display must capture them instantly – take a photo of your shop window, laminate it and use it as a template to sketch ideas on. Remember less is more.
3. Choose your featured products wisely
Choose the most popular merchandise to feature or pick items that you have an abundance of. Don’t pick products that are low in stock – you don’t want disappointed customers.
DESIGNING AND FITTING YOUR WINDOW DISPLAY
Think of your window space as three separate layers: layer one is your window and can contain vinyl window graphics to frame your display, layer two is the area for your merchandise and graphic props whilst layer three is your background where you can use fabric printed backdrops or hang PVC banners to create depth.
5. Varied heights
What you think is eye-level, might not be. Stand at the front of your shop and add a marker on the glass so you always know what passers-by can see. Elevate props and merchandise off the ground and place items at various heights to keep things interesting. You could have light weight graphics made from foam centred board to hang from the ceiling.
6. Durable and reusable products
You’ll want to get the best use out of your props and graphics and utilise them over and over again, so invest in quality materials. Investing in a backdrop system that allows you to easily change low cost fabric backgrounds can put a whole different context to your window display and last you a lifetime. A dark starry night print will give your window display a completely different feel to a bright sunny design. Lighting can also give you different depths and focal points in a powerful way – remember to use LED to save electricity costs and the environment.
A WINDOW DISPLAY IS NEVER COMPLETE
By continuing the theme and flow of your window display into your store makes the customer experience more consistent – making you look more credible and professional. You could create a feature wall display on the rear of your fabric background using a – giving customers a trusted feeling making them more open to buy.
8. Clean and dust
Often forgotten by many, keep your display at its best by keeping the windows clean inside and out. A quick dust of your props and merchandise will keep the window display looking at its best too.
9. Rotate and change
The same window display week after week will be forgotten about quickly – some stores change their display every single week! But updates don’t have to be costly; you can rotate the display items into different positions, change the merchandise and change the backdrop or lighting.
Have fun! Create a space that inspires, educates and stimulates desire within a potential customer to engage with you.
