Glasgow 2014 Handover Ceremony Fabric Props
The client needed 66 banners of various sizes and colours. These
would be used by a troupe of dancers to perform a choreographed
dance routine in the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth
Games.
Material needed to have good tensile strength, be very light in
weight, aesthetically pleasing to the eye and flow easily for a
series of origami-type dance movements.
Cestrian conducted strength tests on various materials. The
outcome of these tests was that FR Ripstop would be the best
solution. As an extra precaution, and to provide additional
opacity, it was decided that the banners would be produced in 3
layers to diminish any risk of the material ripping during the
performance. The layers consisted of 2 printed pieces, for the top
and the bottom, and an unprinted layer in between. These were then
sewn together using a double stitch.
Colour coded grab handles were added to ensure that the dancers
were able to react at speed when passing the banners to other
performers.
A number of banners were delivered to Glasgow, ahead of the
event, so that the dancers could rehearse beforehand; the remainder
were then shipped direct to Delhi.
The final outcome was achieved using a Mimaki 320 Textile
Printer with a maximum size of 3m x 50m and resolution up to
1080dpi capable of printing 60sqm per hour.
Various colours were printed onto Polyester Ripstop suitable for
a range of applications that include retail graphics, theatrical
backdrops, flags, banners, soft signage and PoP.
The banners provided a fire rated, lightweight solution with
excellent tensile strength which complied with health and safety
regulations.
The solution provided the following benefits;
- Maximum impact
- Lightweight solution
- Fire rated
- Excellent tensile strength
- Health and safety compliant
- Within budget
